While the U.S. is increasing it’s pork business and Beyond Meat is constantly loosing money and markets, in Europe we see a reverse trend, pushed by ideology.

The European Commission has approved a comprehensive aid programme from the government of the Netherlands. Up to EUR 700 million can now be made available to compensate farmers who voluntarily close their livestock facilities in certain areas of the Netherlands by 1 October 2029.

Last week, Vion Food Group announced that it would sell its shares in the South German pig slaughterhouses in Vilshofen and Landshut to Erzeugergemeinschaft Südbayern, which already had a 49 percent stake in these locations. The sale will considerably reduce the importance of the company in Germany and has consequences for Vion Netherlands and the corporate structure, resulting in a wave of layoffs. Soon the German pig market will remain a show with two players: Tönnies and Westfleisch.

Meanwhile the prices are showing some consolidation. The crops are not looking good in East and Central Europe, and local farmers are wondering to fill up their barns or not, but grain prices will be still fixed on the Paris and Chicago stock exchange and global grain production is not expected to decrease. With the new crops, ASF risk increases and new outbreaks could affect the pig business.

It is the last week of August, school is starting soon and farmers will have to return to their work. It’s the last opportunity to enjoy a summer holiday!
